Who Invented the Microphone, Motion Picture Camera & Light Bulb?

Three transformative inventions, three distinct inventors.

InventionKey InventorYear / Notes
Microphone (carbon-button)Emile Berliner1876 — sold patent to Bell Telephone; enabled practical telephony.
Motion Picture Camera (Kinetograph)William Kennedy Laurie Dickson1890–91 — developed at Edison's lab; 35mm film, sprocket drive.
Incandescent Light Bulb (practical)Thomas Edison1879 — carbonized bamboo filament, high vacuum, commercial distribution.

Important Nuances

  • Microphone: David Edward Hughes (1878) and Alexander Graham Bell (liquid transmitter, 1876) also contributed; Berliner's carbon design won commercially.
  • Motion Picture: Louis Le Prince (1888) shot the first moving pictures on paper film; the Lumière brothers (1895) created the projector (Cinématographe) for public exhibition. Dickson built the camera system under Edison.
  • Light Bulb: Joseph Swan (UK) demonstrated a working bulb months before Edison; they later merged into Ediswan. Edison's breakthrough was the system (generators, wiring, sockets, mass production).

Innovation is rarely a solo act—these three built on predecessors and enabled successors.
