Protocolos GSM: MS, BTS, BSC, MSC (arquitectura de red 2G)

GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) es el estándar 2G que definió la telefonía móvil digital global. Su arquitectura en capas y entidades de red usa protocolos específicos por interfaz.

Arquitectura simplificada

  • MS (Mobile Station): Teléfono + SIM.
  • BTS (Base Transceiver Station): Antena + radio (célula).
  • BSC (Base Station Controller): Controla varias BTS, gestiona radio, handovers.
  • MSC (Mobile Switching Center): Conmutador central, conecta llamadas, gestiona movilidad, roaming, SMS.
  • HLR/VLR/AUC/EIR: Bases de datos de suscriptores, ubicación, autenticación, equipos.

Protocolos por interfaz/capa

Interfaz Um (MS ↔ BTS) - Protocolo MS (LAPDm / RRLP / RR / MM / CM)

Capa 1: Física (GMSK, TDMA, bursts).
Capa 2: Enlace de datos — LAPDm (derivado ISDN LAPD), multiframe, channels lógicos (SDCCH, SACCH, FACCH, TCH).
Capa 3: Tres subcapas:

  • RR (Radio Resource): Gestión canales, handover, medición, potencia, cifrado (A5/x).
  • MM (Mobility Management): Registro ubicación (Location Update), autenticación (A3/A8, Ki, RAND, SRES, Kc), identificación IMSI/TMSI, detach.
  • CM (Connection Management): CC (Call Control: setup, connect, disconnect), SS (Supplementary Services), SMS (CP-RL, RP, TP).

Interfaz Abis (BTS ↔ BSC) - Protocolo BTS

  • Basado en LAPD (Q.921) sobre E1/T1 (timeslots 64 kbps).
  • Gestión canales radio (asignación, liberación, configuración hopping, potencia).
  • Transporte tráfico voz (TCH) y señalización (RSL - Radio Signalling Link).
  • O&M (Operación y Mantenimiento) via OML (Operations & Maintenance Link).
  • Autenticación/seguridad: BTS ejecuta A3/A8 con Ki (SIM) bajo control BSC/MSC.
  • SMS: BTS relaya CP-DATA entre MS y BSC/MSC.

Interfaz BSC ↔ MSC - Protocolo BSC (BSSAP / SCCP / MTP3b)

  • BSSAP (Base Station Subsystem Application Part): DTAP (Direct Transfer Application Part - mensajes capa 3 MS↔MSC transparentes) + BSSMAP (gestión recursos radio: handover, asignación canal, paging, carga).
  • Sobre SCCP (Signalling Connection Control Part) (connectionless/class 0, connection-oriented/class 2).
  • Sobre MTP-3b (Message Transfer Part nivel 3 broadband) / MTP-2 / MTP-1 (E1/T1).
  • Gestión handovers inter-BTS/intra-BSC/inter-BSC/inter-MSC.
  • Control potencia, asignación inicial canal, paging.

Núcleo MSC - Protocolo MSC (MAP / CAP / ISUP / TCAP / SCCP / MTP)

  • MAP (Mobile Application Part): Roaming, autenticación (HLR/AUC), gestión ubicación (VLR), SMS (MT-FSM, MO-FSM), suplementarios, USSD.
  • CAP (CAMEL Application Part): Servicios inteligentes (prepago, control llamadas, roaming control).
  • ISUP (ISDN User Part): Señalización troncal voz entre MSC y red fija (PSTN/ISDN).
  • TCAP (Transaction Capabilities Application Part): Transporte transacciones MAP/CAP.
  • Localización suscriptores: HLR (Home Location Register) = datos permanentes; VLR (Visitor Location Register) = ubicación temporal. MSC consulta VLR/HLR para enrutar llamada entrante (paging).
  • Handovers suaves: MSC ancla conexión mientras MS cambia de célula/BSC/MSC.

Evolución: 3G (UMTS) añade RNC (Radio Network Controller) → Iu-CS/Iu-PS (RANAP). 4G (LTE) → eNodeB + MME/S-GW/P-GW (S1AP, GTP-C/U, Diameter). 5G → gNodeB + AMF/SMF/UPF (NGAP, HTTP/2, PFCP). Pero la lógica MM/RR/CM y MAP persiste adaptada.
