Servicios SO Requeridos para Soporte PC Card (PCMCIA/CardBus)

Para que dispositivos PC Card (16-bit PCMCIA) o CardBus (32-bit) funcionen, el SO debe proveer dos capas servicio núcleo:

1. Servicio Plug and Play (PnP)

  • Detecta inserción/extracción tarjeta (interrupción hardware)
  • Lee CIS (Card Information Structure) de memoria atributo tarjeta
  • Identifica: fabricante, modelo, voltaje, velocidad, rangos E/S, necesidades IRQ
  • Asigna recursos: puertos E/S, ventanas memoria, IRQ, DMA
  • Carga driver función apropiado (red, almacenamiento, módem, etc.)
  • Notifica aplicaciones llegada dispositivo

2. Servicios Socket (Gestor Socket)

  • Gestiona socket físico (ranura) hardware
  • Controla conmutación alimentación (Vcc, Vpp) — 5V/3.3V, voltaje programación
  • Maneja señales reset, ready/busy, detección tarjeta, sentido voltaje
  • Provee interfaz abstracta para servicios tarjeta manipulen socket
  • Coordina múltiples sockets (bridge/controlador)
  • Implementa registro ExCA (Exchangeable Card Architecture) (compat. Intel 82365SL)

Capas Soporte (Arquitectura Software PC Card)

  1. Hardware: Socket + controlador (bridge PCI-a-PCMCIA, ej. TI PCI1410, Ricoh RL5C476)
  2. Socket Services: Abstracción hardware (esta capa)
  3. Card Services: Gestión recursos, binding driver, notificación cliente
  4. Function Drivers: NDIS (red), SCSI/ATA (almacenamiento), Serie (módem), etc.
  5. Aplicaciones

Implementaciones SO

  • Windows 9x/2000/XP: Integrado (PCMCIA.sys, CardBus.sys)
  • Linux: pcmciautils, pccardd, yenta_socket (módulos kernel)
  • macOS (legacy): Soporte PCMCIA/CardBus eliminado post-2010
  • DOS/Win3.1: CardSoft, CardWizard (CS + SS TSRs)

Nota Moderna

PC Card / CardBus / ExpressCard son obsoletos. Sustituidos por USB, PCIe, M.2, Thunderbolt. Solo en sistemas legacy industriales/embebidos.
